Disconnector is a device used for isolation of a part or entire electrical equipment from voltage and current, especially during repair and maintenance of the equipment. Disconnectors act somewhat like a circuit breaker to protect the maintenance personnel from any damage or injury. Disconnectors are used in domestic overhead power lines as well as in sub-stations, power grids and other means of power transmission and distribution.

Disconnecotrs can be manual or motorised and are available for use in low voltage, medium voltage, high voltage and very high voltage ranges. This device can be used in voltage ranges as low as 11 Kv as well as voltage ranges as high as 1200 Kv. The disconnectors with very high voltage rating of upto 1200 Kv are used mainly in China. This is mainly attributed to the increasing need for maintenance, repair and commissioning of very high voltage power grids and substations.

The disconnector market was valued at USD 11,787.22 million in 2019 and is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR of 6.33% throughout the forecast period. North America dominated the global disconnector market in 2019. This high market share is mainly attributed to the increasing demand fro power infrastructure and smart power grids in the region. Among these, the center break segment is expected to account for the largest share in the global disconnector market in 2019. Centre Break Disconnector is used in industrial substations due to its simpler construction. It is also used for railway electrification of catenaries, feeders, and substations. Based on voltage, disconnector market is segmented into 1Kv-32Kv, 33Kv-100Kv, 101 Kv-250Kv, 251Kv-500Kv, 501Kv-800Kv and above 801Kv. The 1Kv-32Kv segment is expected to account for the largest share in the global disconnector market in 2019. In the open state, the switch disconnectors provide safety isolating clearance and meet the requirements form disconnectors. The switch disconnectors of voltage range 1Kv to 32Kvare used for switching no-load currents of transformers in industrial, commercial, photovoltaic applications and utility installations involving transformers, generators, motors, and power feeder circuits. In photovoltaic application, manually operated photovoltaic load break switch rated from 25 A to 3200A with a voltage of up to 1500V is used. Switch disconnector of range 1Kv to 32Kv are also available as a mono-block switch disconnector, a modular electrical switch as well as a remote electrical switch, it has proven its robustness in some of the harshest switching environments worldwide. Switch disconnectors of range 1Kv to 32Kv have been designed and tested for all types of applications: earthing, floating, or bipolar. Indoor and outdoor disconnectors of this range can be operated with: manual or motor operating mechanisms.
