A duplex stainless steel is called “duplex” as they have a two-phase microstructure that consists of grains of ferritic and austenitic stainless steel. This duplex stainless steel is twice as strong as the ferric stainless steel and regular austenitic steels. On the basis of grade, it is segmented into a duplex, lean duplex, and super duplex. In duplex grade, the chromium content is in between 19.5 and 23 percent and nickel content between 3 and 6.5 percent. Whereas in super duplex, the chromium content is between 24 and 30 percent, nickel between 3.5 and 8 percent and molybdenum is between 0.8 and 5 percent. Furthermore, copper (up to two percent) and tungsten (up to 2.5 percent) may be added to the alloy.
By product form, it is segregated into tubes, pumps & valves, fittings& flanges, and welding wires. The tubes product form is most widely used in the oil & gas and chemical & petrochemical industry because of its high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking in chloride bearing environments, sulfide stress corrosion, very high mechanical strength, and high energy absorption, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and good workability and weldability. They are generally used in offshore oil & gas exploration and production, heat exchangers in the chemical industry, and hydraulic and instrumentation applications in the marine industry.
On the basis of end-users, it is divided into oil & gas, desalination, chemical, pulp & paper. The duplex stainless steel is majorly used in the oil & gas industry as it is vital to ensure that the right alloys are used which can adapt to higher pressure conditions and harsher environments and safeguard against the high cost of component failure. Usually, piping becomes heavier as the depth for exploration increases. Thus superior mechanical strength of duplex stainless steel helps create lighter pipes.
