A device used to measure the energy in an optical signal is an optical power meter (OPM). The term generally relates to a device used in fiber optic devices to test average power. Other general-purpose light power monitoring systems are generally referred to as radiometers, photometers, laser power meters, light meters or lux meters. A typical optical power meter comprises a sensing amplifier and screen calibrated sensor. The sensor comprises mainly of a chosen photodiode for the suitable spectrum of wavelengths and energy concentrations. The measured optical energy and fixed wavelength are illustrated on the display panel. A traceable calibration standard such as a NIST standard is often used to calibrate power meters. A traditional optical power meter responds to a diverse light spectrum, however, the calibration relies heavily on wavelength. This is usually not a problem as the test wavelength is usually known, but it does have a handful of drawbacks. First, the user must position the meter at the precise wavelength of the test, and secondly, if other spurious wavelengths are detected, the result will be faulty readings.

Multichannel OPM is used primarily in the automation sector. Multichannel OPM is used in a fiber-optic message to measure absolute power. The power meter must be correctly calibrated and tuned to this wavelength for this application at the wavelength being measured for measuring the fiber optical distortion in conjunction with an appropriate stable origin of light. Since this is a relative experiment, there is no specific necessity for precise calibration unless two or more meters are used owing to range problems. If a more complicated two-way regression experiment is carried out, the calibration of the power meter can be ignored even when using two meters. To assist in rapid wireless continuity monitoring, some tools are integrated for optical sample voice detection. Usually, 270 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz are standard test tones. For ribbon fiber continuity screening, some devices can also determine one of 12 hues.
