Regenerative Braking Systems Market

Regenerative Braking System (RBS) is a system that utilizes a generator during braking to recover kinetic energy. In conventional vehicles, most of the kinetic energy generated during braking is converted into heat and is dissipated into the environment. RBS helps to convert the heat produced into electrical energy and to store it further in an energy storage system like flywheel, batteries, and ultra-capacitors. Owing to the increase of vehicle sales during the past few years, the contribution of the automotive industry in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission has increased. The increasing content of GHG is causing severe environmental problems such as global warming and negative effect on climate change. The rising level of GHG created a demand to limit the GHG emission by vehicles. Several legislative bodies across the world issued rules and regulations to curb the GHG emission by vehicles. RBS, when used as one of the engine components of the vehicle not only decreases the GHG emission but also increases the fuel efficiency. Hence to adhere to the strict regulations, an increase in the adoption of RBS is witnessed in the automotive industry. This, in turn, increased the number of product launches, merger, acquisitions, and collaborations pertaining to automotive RBS. Factors driving the regenerative braking systems market are rising demand for fuel-efficient vehicles, such as Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), as well as stringent government rules and regulations on automotive pollution. However, restraints associated with RBS increase the overall cost and weight of the vehicle.

Based on vehicle type, the passenger vehicle segment is expected to hold the largest regenerative braking systems market share during the forecast period owing to its superior benefits such as high efficiency of energy conversion as compared to RBS used in trucks or buses. In addition, during braking, RBS can recover about half of the energy wasted by passenger vehicles. Also according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers, the number of passenger cars sold increased from 49,650,336 in 2009 to 70,849,466 in 2017 and is expected to further grow and acts as one of the main opportunities for the growth of the regenerative braking systems market.

Based on system, the batteries segment is estimated to hold the largest share in the regenerative braking systems market. The significant factor driving the development of this category is the high use of battery-based RBS system in passenger vehicles. However, in terms of growth, ultra-capacitors are expected to lead the regenerative braking systems market during the forecast period, owing to better charge-discharge capability than batteries, and their ability to run at a lower temperature (till -40 degree Celsius).

Asia-Pacific accounted for the largest regenerative braking systems market share and is anticipated to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period. This is due to the increased adoption of electric vehicles such as electric two-wheeler and passenger cars in China, Japan, and India. In addition, government-imposed laws and regulations on vehicle emissions supplemented regenerative braking systems market development in Asia-Pacific. China was the dominant country in Asia-Pacific, especially in the two-wheelers and passenger cars segment. China has 230 million E-bikes, 83,000 E-cars, and 36,500 E-bikes as of 2015. This is the consequence of advances in electric vehicle technology and public projects such as EVSE infrastructure investment. Moreover, the rise in the number of charging station in countries such as China, Japan, and India has augmented the growth of the Asia-Pacific regenerative braking systems market.

Regenerative Braking Systems Market

Regenerative Braking Systems Market

North America is estimated to have a significant share in the regenerative braking systems market. The increase in the demand for zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) owing to stringent government regulations is acting as a driver for the growth of automotive RBS in the region. Several administrative bodies in the region such as the EPA, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), among others, are actively working towards decreasing greenhouse gas emission. Owing to this, an increase in the demand for ZEV in North America has been witnessed during the past years, thereby benefiting the industry. The European regenerative braking systems market is expected to have a significant regenerative braking systems market share. The growth of the European market can be attributed to several regulations by the European Commission against carbon emission. Hence, to abide by the stringent regulations, the automakers in Europe are integrating their vehicles with regenerative braking systems as one of the components to ensure the reduction in greenhouse gas emission and fuel consumption.

Key Factors Impacting Growth of Regenerative Braking Systems Market:
    • The increasing content of GHG causing severe environmental problems.
    • Increase in the overall cost and weight of vehicle.
    • Stringent government rules and regulations.
    • Increasing adoption of electric vehicles.

Key Developments in Regenerative Braking Systems Market:

  • In March 2018, ZF Friedrichschafen(Germany) aqcuired Wabco which is a leading global supplier of braking control systems, technologies and services that improve safety, efficiency and connectivity of commercial vehicles including trucks, buses and trailers.
  • In September 2018, under its TRW brand, ZF(Germany)Aftermarket introduced the first brake pad specifically designed for Electric Vehicles. With a staggering 97 percent of the European electric car parc covered within months of launch, including Tesla and Nissan Leaf, demand is only set to increase. The program, known as Electric Blue, will be expanded with products for hybrid that are already in the testing process.
  • In April 2019, Continental AG (Germany) completed the testing of its MK C1 brake system which will reduce carbon of hybrid vehicles by 5g/km.
