Secondary Macronutrients Market, By Product Type (Sulfur, Calcium, and Others), By Application (Cereals grains, Oilseeds pulses, and Others), By Region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, and South America) – Market Size & Forecasting To 2028

In plant nutrition it is important that there is no deficiency in primary or secondary macronutrients or in essential micro elements. Moreover these elements must be present in the proper proportion. Secondary macronutrients are essential to plant function and are required in quantities less than N, P, K, but more than micronutrients. Secondary macronutrients are calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. They are called secondary nutrients because plant require them in smaller quantities than nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Long term cropping practices have removed measurable amounts of these nutrients from the soil. Consequently, secondary macronutrient deficiencies are becoming an increasingly important factor in intensive crop production systems, especially in soils fertilized only with the primary macronutrients. The function of calcium in plant is to provide structural support to cell walls. Calcium also serves as a secondary messenger when plant is physically or biochemically stressed. It is also involved in cell growth and development, it improves plant vigor by activating the formation of roots and their growth. Available calcium can be lost from the soil when it is dissolved and removed in drainage water removed by plants, absorbed by soil in rain water or absorbed by clay particles. Calcium is the most important secondary macronutrients, it’s deficiency can cause death of plant at growing point, shedding of flowers, weakened stem growth. Limestone is the primary source of the calcium, it is also found in basic slag, gypsum, hydrated lime and burned lime and these sources are generally used for peanuts, peppers, and tomatoes.

Sulfur is needed in fairly large quantities by most crops. It is an essential building block in chlorophyll development and protein synthesis. Sulfur deficiency can cause delaying in fruit formation. There are many sources of sulfur such as organic matter, ammonium sulfate, zinc sulfate, potassium sulfate. Magnesium is important for photosynthesis process. It contributes to the storage of sugars within the plant it also performs the function of an enzyme activator. Magnesium deficiencies results in weak stalk, loss of greenness in older leaves. Most used sources of magnesium are magnesium sulfate, magnesium oxide, dolomitic limestone.

Whole plant nutrition is depending upon the secondary macronutrients as they work on physiological processes of plant. Secondary macronutrients govern the both quality and quantity of the yield produced. Growing population across the globe is demanding more from agriculture sector, to fulfil this demand it needs to increase the quality yield, which in turn increasing the use secondary macronutrients. Extensive use of primary macronutrients nutrients is making soil deficit in secondary macronutrients which is increasing the application of secondary macronutrients. Many fruit crop producers are increasing their production with the application of secondary macronutrients. Increased in agriculture practices and increasing investments in agricultural operations by developing countries boosting the market growth.

Some impact factors:

  • Increasing demand for high value crops such as fruits and vegetables driving the market growth.
  • Increasing need of agriculture products with growing population is the major driving factor of the market
  • Growing awareness and importance of secondary macronutrients among the farmers
  • Due to COVID 19 pandemic situation agricultural activities are stopped across the globe which may slowdown the growth of market
