A Zero Liquid Discharge System (ZLD) uses the advanced technological water treatment process to limit liquid waste at the end of the industrial process. The main objective of ZLD is to reduce wastewater and produce clean water for reuse. Moreover, by treating wastewater, valuable elements from the waste stream can be recovered, such as potassium sulfate, sodium sulfate, caustic soda, gypsum, etc. This helps companies to save money and benefits the environment, as is reduces water usage for their processes.

Based on end-use industry, the energy & power segment is expected to account for the largest share of the zero liquid discharge systems market, as coal-fired power plants discharge concentrated effluents containing harmful and toxic substances such as arsenic, boron, selenium, wet fly ash, etc., into water streams. The demand from pharmaceuticals and chemicals & petrochemicals industries is also expected to grow, as government bodies are laying down rules to reduce wastewater generated during the process of various chemicals required for their products.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, in 2017, approximately 4,015 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity was generated by utility-scale facilities in the US alone. Approximately 62.7% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas) out of which, 30.1% was coal. 

A major constraint to the zero liquid discharge systems market is the costly installation of ZLDs.         for the optimization of the entire wastewater system, including sewer networks and treatment plants.
